Are you getting enough sleep?

Are you getting enough sleep?

Do you feel like you are normally getting enough sleep? I know that when I don’t get enough (or have sleepless nights), it effects everything in my daily routine. My brain and thoughts are foggy, my concentration, reasoning, memory and problem solving become seriously impaired. These are all short term effects. Over the long run, poor sleeping patterns can have health consequences such as diabetes, heart disease, weight gain and chronic fatigue.

Whatever your sleep patterns may be, here are some helpful tips and suggestions in order to give you that good night’s sleep that is so essential for your overall health and well-being.

Tips for a Good Night Sleep

  • Exercise. Even a 20-30 minute walk can help. Just be careful not to exercise right before bed, as it may get you too energized.
  • Have a before-bed routine. Turn off your phone and all electronics by 9 pm.
  • Instead of screen time: read a book or take a warm bath with essential oils like lavender or chamomile.
  • Use a homemade spray bottle of water and a few drops of a lavender essential oil and spray in your bedroom and on your pillow.
  • If you get hungry late at night and tend to zombie eat (who doesn’t?), eat something that is rich in calcium. This mineral contains tryptophan, an amino acid the body uses to produce melatonin, a natural hormone that helps induce and maintain sleep.
