The next time you go out to shovel, use these safe and ergonomic tips:
1. Make sure you have the appropriate shovel for the task at hand.
➢ Shovel should be light (max 3 lbs.).
➢ Handle of shovel needs to be at chest height; it decreases forward bending.
➢ Shift the direction that you pitch the snow- to the left and then right. This will prevent overuse.
2. When shoveling, remember to:
➢ Pace yourself and listen to your body. If you start to feel any pain, do not continue. Take a break and wait to see how you feel.
➢ Dress appropriately. Wear gloves that allow a good grip on your handle and suitable footwear to reduce the risk of falling.
3. Best ergonomic work techniques for shoveling snow:
➢ Have your feet hip width apart
➢ Keep your weight on your front foot
➢ Do not bend from your back. Keep your spine aligned and squat from the hips, bending your knees. This way you are using your larger muscles in your buttocks and legs.
➢ Keep the shovel close to your body. This will lighten the load and put less strain on your spine.
