Your prescription for health: breathe deeply.

As any athlete can tell you, deep breathing is not only important, it is necessary. If during intense cardio, you fail to absorb the oxygen needed, your body will tire much quicker and your lungs will burn. Loss of endurance and physical pain from a lack of breathing can limit the body’s circulatory system and contribute to other issues, mentally and physically.

Anxiety and panic attacks can be a result of limiting the body from the benefits of slow and steady breathing. If you commonly experience shortness of breath, it is likely that you are not drawing air fully into your lungs. Breathe normally and observe where your breath is.  Does the air extend to your chest or deeper to your abdomen? Do you inhale and exhale for the same amount of time? Can you breathe slowly?

When you’re not lacking oxygen, it positively affects your whole system. The heart beats to move blood through the body, specifically to pump oxygenated blood to different parts of your body, so that it can continue to function – brain, organs, and muscles included.
